2017 Honda MSX125 Grom Undertail System: Sneak Peek

When you’re finally able to get your hands on that bike you’ve always wanted, there are some OEM parts that you’re naturally inclined to remove in order to achieve that super clean, flawless look. In the case of the Grom, the first thing you notice is the bulky, borderline obnoxious, stock fender. Add the plain jane tail light, and it’s just one big eye sore. It’s an easy fix, right? Just remove it? If only it were that simple.  But you won’t have to stare at that empty space forever. Here’s a peek at what we’ve been working on to solve that unsightly problem for the 2017 Grom.

Let’s begin with the fender. Be warned, when you remove the OEM fender, you’re going to see a big space, with a decent portion of subtray in view, making that whole section look incomplete and naked. You definitely don’t want the subtray exposed, leaving your trunk and battery compartments vulnerable to dirt and water penetration. Don’t worry though, we’ve figured that out for you. A few months ago, we launched a simple and cost effective Fender Eliminator System that uses a mini undertail cover and a choice of two different style license plate mounts. We’re loving the look and performance of the fender eliminator system so much, that we decided to keep the innovation momentum going, by answering customer requests for an updated integrated tail light system, specifically for the 2017 Grom. A similar kit for the 2013-2016 generation Grom can be seen here. We decided to jump in and start the development of a much more elegant undertail for the Grom. The new undertail will keep the smooth lines of the bike, while also enabling the mounting of our super bright integrated tail light with a ducted lens design. In addition to the smoother look, it will still retain the same options for two different license plate mounts.

But how do we do it?

We think in solutions. Once we removed the OEM fender, we saw a void and began creating the most efficient and attractive way to fill it. We based our undertail design around the fact that it had to seem like an OEM piece, while being very clear that it’s not. Our undertail will mount to all OEM fastener locations, but will require the relocation of the tip sensor and trimming of the subtray. Our ducted taillight, available in a choice of clear or smoked lens, will come pre-installed on each unit, and all electrical connections will be plug-and-play. The license plate mount will fasten to the assembly through two of the OEM fastener locations during the final installation on the bike.

The final production undertails will be injection molded, using ABS plastic. The surface of the undertail will be color matched and textured to stay consistent with the texture of the rest of the bike’s underside– truly seamless. The fender eliminator components will be CNC laser cut steel, with durable matte black powdercoat.

Good news, it’s not!  And we’ve got your back with a super-thorough installation video, featuring close-up visuals and step by step instruction. Even without mechanical experience, the install process is pretty straightforward. So, what do you say?

When will it be available?

At the moment, the files that will be used to cut the molds are being finalized. The tail light is ready for manufacture. The license plate mounts are in stock. It won’t be long now. A good projection for a launch date would be mid summer 2017.

Summary

UPDATE as of 4/12/2017: Our machined molds are finalized and the core and cavity are ready to be assembled for manufacturing. We will be manufacturing a few samples for approval on texture and color as soon as possible.
