With a bike like the DRZ400 the fun begins with the turn of a key. The DRZ400, also known as just “DRZ” or “Dizzer”, has been around since the early 2000’s and has been running strong in a wide range of environments. This bike can easily handle almost anything you throw at it, so we decided to see what all the fuss was about.

The Meeting

The bike itself is a very eye-catching piece of machinery. The high seat height, rugged body plastics, and overall look make you want to throw a leg over and take it into the woods. However, as nice as this bike looks there was one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb – that HUGE fender hanging off of the rear. Almost all bikes these days include a fender from the factory that most of us wish to never lay eyes on, and that’s where we come in! We removed the stock fender and right away noticed how much cleaner the bike looked. Weighing in at almost 3 pounds, the stock fender assembly contains not only a mounting point for the license plate but the brake light and turn signals as well. We soon noticed this wasn’t going to be a simple clean-up job.

The Process

We knew that the success of the replacement unit would depend on perfect fitment and easy installation, so we started the design process by measuring the dimensions of the stock mounting location. We had previously designed a tail light for the Honda Grom and noticed that the DRZ may be able to use that same design. After making a few modifications, we were able to fit the existing unit into the DRZ with ease. We were then faced with the task of standardizing this newly fit unit so that no modifications would be necessary. The end result was an additional bracket used in pair with our original tail light design. Because these bikes are used for the dirt as well as the street, we chose to mount this unit onto the rear sub-frame of the bike for maximum strength and security. The additional bracket used to mount the tail light is also the mounting point for our fender eliminator with two bolts holding the bracket in place. We even decided to offer an adjustable bracket option for those of you who would like full control of your license plate position! (See pictures above for what’s in the box!)

The Install

We made sure to put in the work so you wouldn’t have to! We designed this product to not only turn heads, but to give you a simple and clean install. With more riders purchasing these bikes for road use, we wanted to allow for removal of the stock fender without any serious repercussions. You simply begin by removing your seat and plastic body panels. Unplug your stock lights while taking care to clear all wires from being snagged on any body pieces. You can then completely remove the stock fender assembly, piece our kit together, and install it onto the bike. It really is that simple! Feel like you may need some visuals? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with an in-depth installation video which can be found on our YouTube channel. (Be sure you hit that subscribe button) As always, we warranty all of our products against manufacturer defects for up to one year from the date of purchase. Just contact us and we’ll be happy to help!

  1. Purchased the LED taillight and turnsignal kit for my 2013 DRZ/SM.Install was a snap, fit and finish was excellent and cost was very reasonable. All the staff at TST has been the best as far as I am concerned. Now I’m not going to say its been a magical relationship. I’ve had issues with the product itself, the signal flasher to be specific,I think I’m on number 5 so far,it was explained to me very simply that there was an issue with the flashers and everytime it has gone bad,I’ve called and a new was sent out that day.Nothing, nothing is perfect, however the staff and TST is close in my book. Kudos to all.I look forward to continuing to use TST products, thanks all.
